Elisha is one of the greatest prophets in earth history, the book of kings could not be complete without the story of this great man. He had so many prophecies to his personality and did so many miracles. He did 32 miracles during his lifetime- one of the highest number of miracles to be done by a scripture prophet. Looking at this man’s life, we tend to celebrate his life and actually not understand what brought him to that height of great wonders. Elisha was a servant to Prophet Elijah and suddenly he became a prophet, doing two times the miracles his master did. What happened to Elisha was that he received the mantle.
The mantle is a loose piece of clothe without sleeves, worn over other clothes. It was a sign of authority. Elijah wore this while he was on earth, and everywhere he went, he was going about with authority. No wonder Elijah had the audacity to have a fire contest with the prophets of baal. As the power of Samson was his hair and that of Moses was his staff, that of Elijah was the mantle. And it was this mantle that got transferred to Elisha. For every man that God uses, there is an instrument that God gives.
The mantle contained the power of God. Elisha had a taste of that mantle in 1Kings 19:19 and he knew the mantle carried something far better than his position as at that time. And from that point, Elisha longed for the power that the mantle carried, no wonder he asked for a double portion of Elijah’s anointing. It is not enough to taste the power; it is great to be the power dam. So many people can manifest so well when they enter into a corporate anointing, but outside of that anointing they cannot manifest. Beyond the corporate anointing, there is something greater. Elisha knew that beyond the resting of the mantle on him, there is a place where he can wear the mantle himself.
For Elisha to have gotten the chance to have worn the mantle, he had always been with power. Elisha was always found around Elijah. If any man wants the fullness of God, then he should always be found around God. Unfortunately, we have men who want to flow in the power of the Holy Ghost but who do not take spiritual things seriously. To get things from God, we must learn to abide in God. When we abide with God, we learn God’s own way, one can be sure that Elijah always gave directions to Elisha pertaining things. And even when the time for the transfer of mantle came, Elisha was still around. He was in no way tired of staying around the anointing. He had a strong hunger for that anointing. The best way to abide with God is to study His word and also in the place of prayer. For some brethren, they used to stay with God, but they no longer do. God looks forward to a generation of men and women who will dwell with Him at all times. The people saw how Peter and his friend spoke and they said ‘this people must have been with Jesus,’ what a testimony.
There are things that will surely stop us from staying with god and getting what God is ready to give unto us. For Elisha, it was the sons of the prophets. For us, they are the lust of the flesh, lust of the eyes and pride of life. It is better we look deeply into our lives and deal with whatsoever is separating us from God.
Elisha knowing what he wanted asked for the right thing when the time came. Sincerely, Elisha could have asked for some other things. God looks at the prayer request of so many people and God is saying they are asking for the wrong thing. Thank God for the Holy Spirit. God is always pleased when He finds people asking for the right thing (read the story of how Solomon asked God for wisdom). And the truth remains that our earnest desire to ask Him is to know more of Him. Seek ye first the kingdom of God and its righteousness, so He says. Are you looking for anointing, ministry, partner, admission, promotion, financial abundance etc? God is saying seek me first. No wonder Paul said he wants to know God and the power of His resurrection.
There are so many things to learn about Elisha and His receiving of the mantle, such as his alertness, humility, discipline and his using of what he received. Having looked at Elisha and mantle, someone’s life is witnessing a reformation in Jesus name. Amen.
