Bad Friends

Show me your friend and I will tell who you are. This saying is so true- A good person will have good friends and a bad person will have bad fiends. A friend is that close person with whom you carry out your life activities, who you can tell anything and will give advice & help to you in times of danger. As believer, God does not want us to have bad friends and so He warns in so many verses in the Bible (Proverbs 1:10, Genesis 34:1-31). Here are types of people we should not take as friends:

  • Unbelievers

One of the dangerous things that can happen to a Christian is to team up with an unbeliever. What friendship with an unbeliever does is to make us compromise and even fall. The Bible warns against such relationship (2 Corinthians 6:14). Why friendship with an unbeliever is dangerous is because you do not have the same agreement about God whom you serve. While you are heading for heaven, he/she is heading for hell. And if care is not taken, you might end up in hell too (Amos 3:3). Friendship with an unbeliever can contaminate the good plans of success, riches, promotion etc that God has for you.
(Ephesians 5:7, 2 Corinthians 6:15, 2 Corinthians 6:17, Isaiah 52:11)

  • Pretenders

These are set of people who pretend to be Christians, but are actually not yet dead to sin. The Bible warns strictly against those people (1 Corinthians 5:11). Anyone who claims to be a Christian, but you know commits evil acts is not worthy to be your friend. This kind of people are not different from unbelievers mentioned above, they can even do worse than to make us compromise and fall.
(Ephesians 5:18, 2 Thessalonians 3:6, 1 Corinthians 6:9)

  • Loose Mouthed People

A loose mouth is an entrance for death. A loose mouthed person can kill someone. He/she does not know how to talk; when to talk; cannot keep secrets; speaks foul words. Being friends with this kind of person will bring insecurity. Especially we have to avoid such friends if one does not want a destiny that will sink (Proverbs 17:20).
(Proverbs 29:20, Proverbs 10:19, Proverbs 21:23, Ecclesiastes 5:2)

  • A fool

A fool is a stupid person, unwise, lacks sense and lacks judgement. They have no advice to give at any point in time, they don’t want to know the truth and they think they know it all. No one should take a fool as a friend. Fools are always walking on the wrong path. If you do not want to tred that wrong path, then don’t take a fool as a friend (Proverbs 18:2-3). A fool will not listen to you in the days of trouble, in fact he will flee. A fool will push you to the pit and turn. Don’t take a fool as a friend.
(Isaiah 32:6, Proverbs 18:6-7, Proverbs 26:11, Proverbs 26:6-7)
There are many other types of friends one should not have. The little that is mentioned here is blessing somebody. Whether you already have a friend in this category or you are planning to take one of them, please terminate the idea, break the friendship and just pray for them.
Instead look for a believer, a non pretender, a cautious & wise person to take as a friend.
If you belong to any of the categories, you cannot attract good friends and your life may not witness the positive change and development but the otherwise. It is better you repent now, become a true believer.
